What changes from state to state

  • Which carriers sell. Some states have two small group carriers, others have a dozen. Blue plans split some states by county.
  • Small group size. Small group means 1 to 50 employees in most states and 1 to 100 in California, Colorado, New York and Vermont.
  • Mandated benefits. States add required benefits on top of federal rules for insured plans.
  • Continuation coverage. Federal COBRA covers employers with 20 or more employees. Many states extend similar rights to smaller groups.
  • Level-funding rules. A few states limit stop-loss sales to small employers.
  • Disability and leave programs. Some states run their own short-term disability or paid leave programs.

Teams in more than one state

A group plan is usually bought in the state where your business is based, and its network has to work where your people live. That gets harder as a team spreads out.

Options include a carrier with a national network, separate plans by location or an ICHRA, which lets each employee buy a local plan. We price the choices that fit your map.

Group Health USA is an independent agency. We confirm that we can serve your state before we quote, and we tell you if we cannot.
